About Fragilidad
Visual Metaphor
Both projects utilize visual metaphors and fragmentation to comment on social and cultural fragility. The combination of the broken Limoges plate and dehydrated elements creates a visual narrative that invites reflection on how societies confront decay and the fragmentation of their structures, values, and beliefs, offering a poetic and profound critique of the present day.
The title “Coffee/break with Marie-Antoinette” alongside the 1900 Limoges coffee set: An element of luxury and refinement, associated with an era of opulence; evokes the figure of Marie Antoinette, a symbol of extravagance and disconnection from the social realities of her time. The elements juxtaposed with the still life indicate the rupture of that opulence and the crumbling of social structures that seemed unshakeable. The refinement and beauty of the coffee set, coupled with the tortoiseshell comb, toothless and with hair, speak of the imprint, of what once was, and symbolize deterioration and the loss of functionality and coherence.
The disordered oil fragments reflect how, in the attempt to reconstruct our understanding of the past and present, we encounter pieces that don’t fit perfectly, representing the complexity and chaos of contemporary social and cultural narratives.
