Fragility

Object, which expresses a poetic metaphor about our current situation. A broken social agreement and contradictory beliefs and needs. An empty nest that tries to shelter a sprouted and already dehydrated potato that represents our cultural unity.

About Fragilidad

Visual Metaphor

The broken plate represents the rupture of our social cohesion and the fragility of the structures that sustain our communities. The empty bird’s nest symbolizes the abandonment and precariousness in which many people find themselves, alluding to the loss of security and home. The potato, as a dehydrated and germinated cultural element, reflects how our traditions and values are deteriorated, attempting to be preserved by a gold leaf coating, which can represent superficial solutions that do not address the underlying problems. This assemblage creates a poetic metaphor that speaks of a fractured social contract and of contradictory beliefs and needs, reflecting the tensions and challenges of the present day.

Both projects utilize visual metaphors and fragmentation to comment on social and cultural fragility. The combination of the broken Limoges plate and dehydrated elements creates a visual narrative that invites reflection on how societies confront decay and the fragmentation of their structures, values, and beliefs, offering a poetic and profound critique of the present day.

The title “Coffee/break with Marie-Antoinette” alongside the 1900 Limoges coffee set: An element of luxury and refinement, associated with an era of opulence; evokes the figure of Marie Antoinette, a symbol of extravagance and disconnection from the social realities of her time. The elements juxtaposed with the still life indicate the rupture of that opulence and the crumbling of social structures that seemed unshakeable. The refinement and beauty of the coffee set, coupled with the tortoiseshell comb, toothless and with hair, speak of the imprint, of what once was, and symbolize deterioration and the loss of functionality and coherence.

The disordered oil fragments reflect how, in the attempt to reconstruct our understanding of the past and present, we encounter pieces that don’t fit perfectly, representing the complexity and chaos of contemporary social and cultural narratives.
